Doing your Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

Why not volunteer with Girlguiding in order to develop your leadership skills as well as covering off the volunteering section of your DofE? Being a uniformed youth group leader is on the list of ideas in the ‘Coaching, teaching and leadership’ category and counts towards the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. Most units meet for 1.5 hours a week which meets the minimum requirements of the DofE qualification.

For my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Volunteering section I helped out as a Young Leader at my local Rainbow unit. The experience I had not only showed me the amazing opportunities Girlguiding offers young women of all ages, but also helped me develop some valuable skills I now deem essential as I move forward in my life. I highly recommend helping out in a unit for your own volunteering section, due to the friends you make and the rewards you gain.” Rachael

For both my Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, I have volunteered at 6th Tonbridge Guides. I enjoy being a Young Leader very much and have developed lot of new skills, such as leadership. It is rewarding to see the Guides overcome challenges and help them to learn new things. I have made many friends through Guiding and hope to continue volunteering when I have finished DofE. Girlguiding is a great opportunity for young women and I highly recommend getting involved.” Georgina

Volunteering for Guides is a great way to open up hundreds of new opportunities. Throughout my time as a Young Leader I have gained valuable life skills such as leadership and teamwork, alongside having amazing fun and making new friends. Through volunteering at Guides I have: camped away from home, marched in parades, spoken publicly before hundreds of people, improved my CV, learnt to communicate with adults and young people, travelled to Japan and of course, gained my Duke of Edinburgh Award. Volunteering is also incredibly satisfying and after every unit meeting, I always feel like I have done something worthwhile.” Lucy
